How to Devise a Marketing Plan

No matter what type of company you are starting, you need a marketing plan in place before you ever open for business. If you skip this step, one thing is for sure: you will have a difficult time expanding your company, as well as the amount of money that you earn. The good thing about devising a marketing plan is that you do not necessarily need to spend days on end finishing this task. In other words, your marketing plan does not have to be over the top as far as details are concerned. As long as you know how you are going to market your business and how to move forward, your plan should be just fine.

Here are several steps to follow if you are in the process of putting together a marketing plan:

1. Decide what is best for the industry that you are in. During this step, you should not only consider your place in the industry, but also how other companies are succeeding within your niche. If you take a close look at the marketing plan of others, you will have an idea of where to start on your own. This is not to say that you should copy exactly what everybody else is doing, but it can never hurt.

2. Put together a list of marketing related techniques that you want to include in your plan. Remember, you need this list before you can finish off the entire plan. When it comes down to it, the list of marketing techniques is what will make up your plan. The only difference is that you will be expanding on each point as you move forward.

3. If possible, find a sample marketing plan that you can rely on while you are working on yours. This will give you information on the basic outline of your plan, as well as how long it should be. One thing to keep in mind is that your marketing plan does not have to be extra long. While some companies put together a plan that is 10 pages or more, you may be comfortable with just a couple pages. This depends on how complex your industry is, as well as how much detail you want to get into.

4. Put together a first draft, and then revisit it after a few days. In most cases, the first marketing plan that you compose is not going to be the final draft. You want to make sure that your marketing plan is as solid as possible when you finally decide to move past this step. For many, the first draft is not the final draft.

5. Even after you are using your marketing plan on a regular basis, you can still make changes to it. In fact, you should expect your marketing plan to change as your business expands. You will find out what works, what doesn’t, and which changes would do the most for your company.

With these five steps, you should be able to devise a solid marketing plan that you can rely on as your business grows. Simply put: you need a marketing plan before you do anything. The way that you market your business from day one will determine your success.
