The online edition of Nature Medicine Journal has confirmed that a team headed by Dr. Philip R. Johnson of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia had been successful to testify the method in monkeys and mice. However that doesn’t mean that vaccines for HIV/AIDS virus are really just few yards away! The work may take years before such a product is really available for humans.

Needless to say those efforts are welcomed by all AIDS researchers, and an AIDS researcher at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Beatrice Hahn welcomed it and said that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. This is something thinking out of the box which the other researchers are actually doing and thinking. Previous efforts of producing a vaccine for the deadly viruses have failed to create a positive reaction, but this try is something different and if it really works it would be a breakthrough in the world of medicine and science.

There are reports that Dr. Margaret Chan, Director WHO, will talk about the recommendations of experts on production of swine flu medicine and new flu vaccine. Few sources revealed that different pharmaceutical companies are really ready to begin their production of the new flu vaccine but they are waiting for a decision that has to be made first. It is also required to decide how much vaccine should they make, how to distribute the vaccines and which countries or who must get the vaccines.

Many experts feel that there is no need and no question of swine flu vaccine being produced, but WHO is required to discuss the matter with its members and keep a close track of the spread of the virus. Since its origin in Mexico, the virus spread in most parts of the globe including few European countries, Japan and America. Therefore keeping a track helps the organization to find out how fast the virus spreads and who are the most vulnerable group to it will help WHO take immediate step to prevent it.

According to WHO, nearly 2 billions of new flu vaccine for the H1N1 virus can be produced annually from reliable sources but the preparation of the first batch will take nearly 3-4 months. And making flu vaccines is not a child’s play! Most pharmaceutical companies can produce one vaccine at a time and the production takes several months. It is expected that Ban Ki Moon the UN General Secretary will meet the senior representatives of the vaccine industry but the UN has declined to name the companies who would manufacture the new vaccine.

In Mexico there are many primary schools which are disinfected.  There was a nationwide agreement in helping to put a stop on the spreading swine flu.  Education officials decided to send back those students who were find symptomatic of this disease. But the whole country didn’t participate in this program.  Among the thirty one states of Mexico, six states put off their schools for the following week because of the doubt in the rising flu cases in many regions.  One of the states of Mexico ordered a delay of one day in the reopening of schools.  Many parents had a fear in sending their children back to school so early.

Moreover the people of Mexico are feeling a little relaxed from the expulsion of swine flu from their country. But its outbreak is continued in other countries of the world. This was confirmed when different health authorities reported 4500 cases of swine flu in 29 countries across the whole globe. 53 deaths have occurred because of this flu in which 48 people belonged to Mexico, 3 people belonged to United States, one person was from Canada and another one was from Costa Rica.

A large number of crews worked long hours in weekends in order to clean the school buildings in Mexico.  There were many sanitary supplies because a large number of students was supposed to resume classes after a two weeks break.  Teachers were ordered to have a look at students showing any symptoms of swine flu.

On Dec. 10, Dr. Maria Siemionow, who led the doctors’ team, replaced 80 percent of Culp’s face altogether, muscles, nerves, bone, skin and blood vessels with a just died woman in 22-hour operation. In January, Culp had hamburgers, pizza and chicken for the first time in years. She left hospital on February 5. Her doctors said that she would have to survive on immune-suppressing drugs for the rest of her life but the dosage has been noticeably reduced. The total cost of her surgery was about USD 250,000 to USD 300,000 that is less than USD 1 million, as estimated by the other surgeons. Culp now praises for those who has made her new face possible.

The officials also told that it was the first case of pig infection in the country. In pigs swine flu outbreaks are quite regular, but they do not have a risk for food safety, however, this time the health officials have warned against the spread of the disease.

In Alberta province some pigs are considered infected because of a farm worker that got the sickness when he was on Mexico tour and returned to Canada later. Now this traveler has recovered, and the infected pigs are also recovering now. The officials believe that the disease hasn’t yet spread beyond the farm and there is no reported death because of the flu.

Tom Vilsack, the US Agriculture Secretary, says in this connection: “To contain the spread of the disease, all necessary steps have been taken by the Canadian government and the sickened pigs have been isolated to prevent the spread of the disease.

“In United States, there is no report of this infection in pigs right now and the detection of virus in Canada wouldn’t change situation in some US states,” he added.

On the other hand, WHO (World Health Organization) says that no evidence has been found yet that the flu virus is being passed through pigs to humans.
