The face of the nation’s first face transplant recipient horribly disfigured in a shotgun blasted by her husband, who later turned the gun towards himself. This blast ruptured her nose, cheeks, her mouth and an eye leaving her upper eyelids, forehead, lower lip and chin. Upon calling herself a monster by a little kid, she decided to represent herself in a complete new look.

After surgery, she smiles, talks, smells and tastes her food perfectly but she is incapable of expressing things perfectly through her facial expressions. Culp recalled that Dr. Risal Djohan, a plastic surgeon, got look to her injuries after two months. He was not sure whether he could fix up her face, but he tried and got success after almost thirty operations. The groundbreaking operation was performed with the help of a donor family that made the operation successful.

On Dec. 10, Dr. Maria Siemionow, who led the doctors’ team, replaced 80 percent of Culp’s face altogether, muscles, nerves, bone, skin and blood vessels with a just died woman in 22-hour operation. In January, Culp had hamburgers, pizza and chicken for the first time in years. She left hospital on February 5. Her doctors said that she would have to survive on immune-suppressing drugs for the rest of her life but the dosage has been noticeably reduced. The total cost of her surgery was about USD 250,000 to USD 300,000 that is less than USD 1 million, as estimated by the other surgeons. Culp now praises for those who has made her new face possible.

A report on The Wall Street Journal’s web site tells that Google is considering again developing a venture capital arm.

The people who were told about the discussion explained that David Drummond, Google’s senior vice president, would lead the effort .According to the reports, 33-years-old William Maris who is a former entrepreneur has been hired by the group for this purpose.

The search engine has considered that idea before but couldn’t work on that plan.

If this new venture succeeds, it would put Google in the more-official role of supporting commencement off the ground as Google well-known for buying companies instead of investing in them. Intel, Hewlett-Packard and Motorola are some other Silicon Valley companies that have extensive VC track records.

The step is being taken at the time when it is hard for overall venture capital investing. Earlier this month, Dow Jones VentureSource told about 12 percent drop in VC investment in the second quarter. It was just around $6.64 billion into 602 deals that is the lowest in three years in the quarterly deal account.

At the expense of companies looking for first-time funding, more venture firms are making money to help later-stage companies. In the second quarter, there was almost 12 percent ($1.6 billion) drop in the sunken amount of money into startups looking for first round funds. On the other hand, there was an increase of 14 percent ($1.3 billion) in later stage deals as these companies had fewer chances to go to public. There wasn’t any venture-backed company in the 2nd quarter that went to public.

WASHINGTON: President Bush here on Monday said that there is no quick fix for rising gas prices. He said that he is troubled by the rise in gas prices in the US. He also mentioned that he will consider the proposals in minimizing gas prices.

More over, President George W. Bush in an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America”, said: “It’s been a while in the making and it’s going to be a while that we solve the problem”. He also said: “We’re too dependent on foreign oil and we need to be exploring more at home”.

There are some suggestions also given. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Democratic president candidate and Republican presumptive nominee John McCain, both have proposed in different ways to suspend gas taxes for the summertime. Tax imposition on oil companies is also suggested. This proposal has been supported by Barack Obama, Democratic rival of Hillary Clinton, and Hillary Clinton herself, along with many other Democrats. Where as bush supports new refineries, nuclear power plant and drilling in the Alaska wilderness.

In his interview on the White House grounds, with his wife Laura, Bush said in support of his idea of new refineries, nuclear power and drilling in Alaska wilderness that: “We’ll analyze some of these suggestions, but the key is that we think long-term for America, that we diversify away from oil and we’re wise and build new refineries and increase supply for the American consumers“.

Bush also said that he feels uneasy in the current scenario due to the rise in gas prices. He said the raised price of gas “troubles me a lot” because it is “like a tax on the working people.” He also said that this raise in price will affect a lot people. Many will cut down their gas usage by opting to drop their summertime trips.

The President also said:“One way to help solve it, of course, is by sending some of the money back. That’s what’s happening now as we speak. There’s a rebate going back to the American people, which should help”. He again repeated his call for Congress to make the tax cuts enacted during his administration, permanent.

A record-breaking sales performance in Asia, South America and Africa had greatly contributed to the significant success of this energy drink over the past year.

Red Bull’s sales had been reported to reach a 17% to 3bn euros increase which is equivalent to $4.4bn. This success happened amidst certain issues that were linked to the product.

Red Bull, the high energy drink that is said to give you “wings” was able to sell to the worldwide market a total of 3.5 billion units. This company is a private firm wherein 49% is solely owned by Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz. The firm’s enormous success can be attributed to its avid fans and loyal consumers. It proved that drinkers of this popular energy-boosting beverage continued to patronize the product despite speculations and rumors concerning its caffeine levels.

Clearly, Red Bull’s impressive performance in the market proved that people did not entertain the issues that were thrown against it. This goes to show the strong foundation that the product had established throughout the years that it had been present in the energy drink market. Red Bull continued to live up to its promises of boosting up your energy when you need it anytime and anywhere – and technically, they have the figures to prove that.

The company claimed that aside from the increase in the sales of Red Bull, improvement in the production and profits also improved in 2007 in comparison to 2006 which, in a way, were already considerably impressive. The company further stated that the current figures are highly representative of Red Bull’s all-time high and peak performance throughout its entire history.

Considering the fact that the company worked hard and struggled in order to maintain its positioning and reputation in the face of trials, it did an extremely great job. The good thing is that, accusations linking the product with various health risks had never been proved. There were no strong evidences that were established that can influence people to stop consuming Red Bull.

Red Bull continued to remain popular and a sound name when it comes to energy drinks. Its sponsorship of various extreme sports and most especially, the Formula One Racing teams, further contributed to its popularity. Needless to say, Red Bull will definitely go a long way. As the figures imply, it will continue to soar in the market.

‘Micro Hydrogen’ is the new concept of fueling the mobile devices. The first ever innovative platform for powering the mobile devices was launched by a Vancouver based developer company, ‘Angstrom Power’, in this year’s ‘International Consumer Electronics Show’ at Las Vegas.

‘Micro Hydrogen’, the power platform combines fuel cell architecture, micro-fluidics, and hydrogen storage tank that can be refilled at one place. It is quite different from the traditional lithium batteries. Instead the ‘Micro Hydrogen’ facilitates all such implementation in side the mobile device only. Thus the ‘Micro Hydrogen’ as a result, offers double the talk time and “fast recharge times of about 10 minutes”, according to the Angstrom Power.

‘Angstrom Power’ has been working on the ‘Micro Hydrogen’ platform with Motorola for a period of last six months. Testing’s having been completed on the Motorola’s Moto Slvr L7 phones. This particular phone was not subjected to any other modifications in the design for future and could have easily lasted for six long months to test the Angstrom’s technology of drawing power. “It will support the increasing energy demands of next generation devices,” said Jerry Hallmark, manager of energy system technologies at Motorola’s Mobile Devices.

Existing mobile devices are facing a big challenge of short battery life. These devices are not properly capable of running miscellaneous applications as they would eat up the battery fast, specially, when running the multimedia applications. Because of this reasons many of the prospective customers keep a distance from buying such mobile devices.

A recently concluded survey by the J.D.Power and Associates also reveal interesting trends of choices among the mobile device users. This survey had an objective to identify the level of satisfaction of the users and consumers. It aimed to determine how satisfied they are with their mobile devices and for this the survey adopted certain parameters including the physical design, operating system, features, durability, and the life of the battery of the device.

Results of this survey revealed that the ‘Sony Ericsson’ enjoyed the highest levels of customer satisfaction and this company could obtain a score of 741 on a 1,000 point scoring scale. Customers of ‘Sony Ericssson’ were specifically happy and satisfied with the features and the life of the battery that the company offers with its mobile devices.

‘Samsung’ stood at the second rank in this survey with 728 points score. Motorola’ was at the third place with the total point scores of 726. Some of the very popular brands including names like ‘Nokia’ , ‘LG Electronics’, and ‘Sanyo’ with some more major players could not score above the general average of the industry at 723 points. This surprising unhappiness of the users of these companies does indicate that they will have to improve in many of the quarters in time to come. It also becomes imperative with these results that these companies must make required improvements with their products designing aspects.

‘Angstrom Power’ is also working simultaneously in collaboration with selected battery manufacturing companies, mobile electronic device manufacturers, and some wireless service provider companies along with Motorola in order to commercialize the ‘Micro Hydrogen’ in the market in near future.

Filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi has set her eyes on making fiction movie which will be based on the documentary she filmed for HBO by the name “Journeys with George”. Avid HBO viewers will remember that this documentary followed President George W. Bush’s presidential campaign of 2000.

The film, which is not yet titled, centers around a young, very impressionable news story producer, finding herself starting to deal with the huge challenges of professional life and personal love in the middle of covering and reporting on a much publicized presidential campaign.

Oscar-winner screenwriter, Mr.Steven Zaillian is producing the film. Zillian said that the tone of the movie “The Devil Wears Prada” seemed quite apparent in the documentary and he encouraged Alexandra Pelosi to use and film her experiences to give a stunningly beautiful screenplay for the movie. The project is also one which will mark Alexandra Pelosi’s debut as a screenwriter.

Zaillian said that Alexandra Pelosi was a very talented documentary and short film filmmaker and an equally great raconteur. He attributed her present and future success to the fact that she has been places, seen and done many things only few of the rest of the people from the film fraternity have. He said he was excited that she had decided to vent out her perspective as an insider and use her gift of storytelling with him in creating a screenplay.

Pelosi is the daughter of Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House. She is also an ex – NBC news producer. The most recent documentary for HBO filmed by her is named “Friends of God: A Road Trip with Alexandra Pelosi.”

This project is a first for the co-venture which was launched by Zaillian in association with Mandate Pictures which aimed to produce small budget films which were character-driven. It also has partnered with Sony for the first-look deal for the movie.
