According to the Pew Internet report, people are coming closer, as mobile phones and internet are helping them to maintain social ties.

A survey of 2,252 Americans shows that one of the keenest users of technology are families.

The survey noted that the use of Internet was often a social activity in families, as 51% parents told that they got online with their children.

Tracy Kennedy, who helped to write the Networked Families report, says: “Some analysts believe that new technologies are hurting family togetherness, but we have found in our survey that there is a new kind of connectedness among families because of cell phones and internet.”

In their survey the researchers examined the differences between families (with children and single adults) in technology use.

The researchers found that so-called ‘nuclear’ families had considerably increased hi-tech gadgetry in their homes than the other measured group.

In these families, 89% had multiple mobile phones and 66% had a high-speed internet connection.

It also found that 58% of this kind of families had more than two computers in the home.

Many people use their mobile phones to keep in touch and maintain social ties with their siblings, parents and children. Similarly, seventy percent of couples (who both had mobile phones) chat or say hello to each other via mobile every day and around 42% parents use mobile phone to contact their children every day.

Great news for people who can’t get enough of talking on their mobile phones, top cellular phone companies are about to give you a treat you cannot possibly miss.

Three of the largest cellular phone carriers are ready to offer unlimited domestic call plans for a flat rate of $100 per month. This move raises the potential for price war. Furthermore, it increases the chances for customers to finally gain full understanding of their monthly mobile phone statements.

The three major cell phone carriers which decided to go for this move are Verizon Wireless, AT&T and T-Mobile USA. Unlimited SMS or text messaging is included in the package.

It was Verizon Wireless who initially announced its move of offering unlimited domestic calls to the public for a fixed monthly fee which was then immediately followed by AT&T. Later, T-Mobile announced to make the same offer. More than half of the cellular phone market is well controlled by these three top cellular phone carriers.

These deals underscore the strong and growing competition over the current customers present in the innovative and ever-changing wireless market. In fact, analyst Craig Moffett of Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. stated among investors that this offer of unlimited plans may be perceived as “watershed moment” in the maturity of U.S. wireless. Moreover, the offer for unlimited call plans also includes long distance calling as well as international roaming.

There had been several complaints that came from consumers on disparate offers by the companies which made it difficult to make comparisons. The convenience of having a flat rate makes the offer uncomplicated and rather simple. However, it could most definitely initiate a war in terms of pricing as analysts had recently concluded. Accordingly, the stocks of major cell phone carriers fell.

Consumers agreed that the simplicity of the offer was a good factor but their concern was related to the cost efficiency of mobile technology. According to them, mobile calls are considerably a lot more expensive.

This offer is going to be more appealing among individuals who are heavy callers. Consumers who are most likely to shift consist of millions who have home-based jobs and those who are frequently traveling as stated by analyst Kenneth Dulaney at Gartner, Inc.

However, the target market is not just limited among people who consume worth $100 for mobile calls per month. A lot of customers even agree on adding extra $10 or $15 monthly just to avoid having to worry in case they will unexpectedly exceed the given limit as stated by Charles Golvin at Forrester Research Inc.

Furthermore, the $100 limit can also give rise to a trend wherein land lines will be replaced with mobile phones. This possibility had already been pronounced among young consumers.

Top GPS maker, ‘Garmin’ has now successfully knocked the doors of the mobile phone markets. “Garmin’ has introduced its first ever mobile phone, the “Nuvifone” that comes with a unique ‘hybrid-device’.

Apple’s “iPhone” started a new era in the mobile phone realm that compelled all related manufacturing companies to come up with advanced features devices and applications. Subsequently Google also announced that it will be introducing its technologically compatible mobile phone software development platform. Many more companies are now bringing advance features and adding more applications to their mobile phone devices.

This week’s unveiling of the Garmin’s “Nuvifone” will also beginning the combination of a mobile phone with a web browser and the GPS. The general appearance of this device is parallel to the “iPhone”. It comes with a slim form factor, 3.5 –inch touch screen, and the on-screen keypad.

Garmin terms this as a “Single device that does it all”. Cliff Pemble, the President and CEO of the Garmin said in his statement, “This is the breakthrough product that cell phone and GPS users around the world have been longing for “.

It is however, different from the Apple’s “iPhone”. Garmin’s “Nuvifone” is basically a GPS personal navigator. This instrument has built-in third-generation cellular technology for high-speed data access. Among the interesting features of this device is its home screen featuring three icons for call, search, and view map for simple access to the phone’s functions.

GPS of the “Nuvifone” works with the built-in camera to take pictures and these pictures are automatically tagged with latitude and longitude. Users have been facilitated to e-mail these pictures to others. Receivers on the other hand would also be able to find out the exact location where it was taken, claimed ‘Garmin’.

The “Nuvifone” if docked properly onto a vehicle mount, will turn the GPS on in an automatic way. Its navigation menu will also be activated, and the user will then would be able to make hands-free calls while simultaneously using the navigation function, according to Garmin.

Currently this mobile phone device is equipped with the specified maps of North America and Europe. It also has a built-in database with millions of points of interest. It working has been configured exactly on the lines of the Garmin’s standard GPS devices and on similar pattern it also offers turn-by-turn audible directions.

The “Nuvifone “, Garmin’s first device is also equipped with the Google local search application. This application is immensely helpful in serving up the nearby venues on the basis of the user’s current location.

According to the introductory announcing statement of the ‘Garmin’, this mobile phone device would be hitting the market shelves sometime during the third quarter of this year. The company however, didn’t disclose much of the details of its marketing strategies including the price structures.

From all the mobile phone manufacturers combined together, there were over a billion mobile phones shipped last year, according to ABI Research. In order to compete and to stay in the market race almost all the companies are integrating several applications with their mobile phones including GPS, digital cameras, media players, and other capabilities.
Garmin along with Google, Apple, and others find the mobile phone market as the next big opportunity and potential expanding revenue generating prospective area.
